It is Located in the North Pacific Coast in Guanacaste province, Playa Grande is the most important nesting site for endangered Leatherback Sea Turtles that come on ashore each year, laying their eggs on the beach and return to sea.

Playa Grande is integrated into the national park in 1990. The general public is allowed during the day only in the period of turtle nesting season. At night the park’s police are on round to make sure that the turtles and their eggs are protected, especially from such tourists who pose a substantial threat to these kind giants as their eggs are considered to be aphrodisiacs and an eastern delicacy. The turtle hatching season is from October to May. It is certainly worth while to see millions of turtles coming on shore under the cover of darkness to lay their eggs. One more popular motivation for visiting Playa Grande, Costa Rica is for the outstanding surfing on the main beach. Playa Grande is quieter than Playa Tamarindo, but the surf here is equally fine. To the north of the beach, there are excellent places for swimming if you do not like surf.
As this beach is part of a protective enclosure, hotels are not allowed to have any rooms facing the beach. However, the visitors will find several hotels, resorts and lodges that are both affordable and economical. By law no one is permitted to roam the beach at night especially during the nesting season and no lights are allowed on the seashore. The reason for this is because the lights scare away the turtles. There is only one hotel next to the beach, the Hotel Las Tortugas that was built before the Marino Las Baulas National Park was recognized. Following the signs to Playa Grande, you will turn left immediately after passing the soccer field. The road will turn to dirt and you will continue for about 10 minutes until you end up in Playa Grande Costa Rica.
