Playa del Coco is one of the most well-known beaches in Costa Rica Coco is the largest village in the Guanacaste area. It is located near Golfo de Papagayo and is easily reachable through the Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia with a 40 kilometer drive. Its name is derived from the cocoa-colored sand that lies between its two rocky headlands. The area is very popular for fishing, surfing and scuba diving. It is known the gateway for surfers to reach the places like Ollie’s Point and Witches Rock. This is the best Scuba diving spot. Getting to Playa del Coco

Playa del Coco is thirty-seven kilometers west of Liberia and connected by good quality roads to San Jose. It is easily accessible of the peninsula’s beaches.

Air:
You can take a direct flight to the Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia. Playa del Coco is only 15 miles from here. Local flights from San Jose are also available to reach Liberia. Nature Air and Sansa Air offer 40-minute daily flights from San Jose into Liberia.
Bus:
Costa Rica’s excellent public bus system will take you at Playa del Coco’s downtown plaza. Buses depart San Jose three times daily. Buses from Liberia depart almost every hour during the day, and will take one-hour to reach Coco. Private transportation services are also available to Playa del Coco. Air-conditioned, comfortable vans will take to many popular Costa Rican towns, including San Jose, Monteverde, Jaco, Manuel Antonio and Arenal.
Car:
From San Jose, take the Inter American Highway (Route 1) to Liberia. Once in Liberia, follow signs past the Daniel Oduber International Airport, then go west toward the town of Comunidad. You will arrive at an intersection with a gas station on your left and signs to Playa del Coco directing you to the right. Follow the road signs to Playa del Coco and, almost two miles later, you will arrive at Playa del Coco’s main boulevard. This trip from San Jose will take approximately 5 hours, and the journey from Liberia will take just 35 minutes.
